Many times during my research of the carnival culture I would frequently come across portraits of the famous performers that made them seem more real and human. These people, who were usually just shown in artist’s renderings on posters, were now visible in the flesh. It was proof that at one point they truly existed.

But at the same time, these portraits flattened the characters and could only tell you so much about who the subjects really were. There was always something else that the viewer desired to know about them that could never be answered by a simple likeness. My portraits are meant to appear as images taken of the performers by a traveling photographer, which show how the performer looks but still provide an element of mystery; a curiosity and a disconnectedness.
Beware, there are a lot of images in here. My trip to New York City was absolutely incredible and couldn't have been possible without the help of my friends, especially Keyana, who housed me and took me all around the city, making my first trip as special as possible. She is the best and deserves a round of applause or something.

On my first full day in the city I didn't take any photographs, I was out and about with Keyana seeing Jimmy Fallon and exploring SVA. So the next day I met Natalie, Lissy, (who I have known for like four years! It was a dream come true) Billeh, and Cara at a coffee shop (I got there all by myself!! using a bus and keyana's help!) and we explored the guggenheim, met up with Keyana and Molly, and then headed to the met!We also met up with Sam later who was so awesome to meet, we basically grew up with photography and flickr at the same time, with the same people as inspirations.
The next day I hopped on a bus (actually I ran to the bus stop with Keyana and lost my metro card, and my bus was full, but yeah okay eventually I ended up on a bus) to Boston to see Emily! It was so much fun, we had so much delicious food and I even got to meet her lovely little cat Luna and boyfriend Joe. It snowed a lot in Boston which initially, was really awesome. But later became really inconvenient and painful. In Boston Emily and I met up with Sarah and Nishat for photos and dinner.
After Boston, Emily and I headed back to the city for the meet up, which was incredbile. There were so many loving and talented people and I can't even begin to name everyone so here is a group shot and link to the meet up album I have on facebook because I am not about to embed all of those onto this giant post as well. I am extremely lucky to have had such a safe and rewarding experience in NYC, especially for my very first time visiting. The internet continues to amaze me because of its ability to bring together so many briliant and loving people, I will never forget this trip or the people I met in the city. I love you all so much, thank you so much for making me feel so welcomed.

If you still haven't seen enough you can browse my shots on instagram! In this class we have to choose a theme for the semester and I chose the vague theme, "hand built circus carnival thing" where I hand make my props and my images directly or indirectly focus on circusy things. So here are some images, I'll put my artist statement at the end. You can read it if you'd like, but read it after you look at the photos. It's pretty long so I don't blame you for foregoing it. The images should speak for themselves though, right?

I want to thank all of my lovely models Lauren, Laura, Courtney and Shell. And I especially want to thank Jordyn Avalee because she brainstormed with me, built costumes with me, assisted in the studio and overall just made the whole thing happen. Without her I would have been so lost. Thanks so much :)
This photographic set comes from my intrigue with the dynamics of Circus culture in America in the 1930’s. The grandiose and elaborate stages in circuses once served for a pedestal upon which many characters were created and idealized. These characters were meant to shock, amuse and surprise. With much research I have come to find that many of the sideshow ‘freaks’ were average people, usually with some type of physical deformity that could be glamorized into something whimsical. The circus is where they found their place when they were ostracized in their own homes for being strange and different. While many photographers, such as Diane Arbus, have taken the direct approach and photographed these “freaks”, I chose instead to fabricate them. In this series I wanted to shed light on the humanity that lies underneath the glitz and glamour of the stage lights. I wanted to show the optical illusions and also shatter them. I wanted to create and destroy each character. I chose three less frequently seen sideshow attractions, which I named, ‘The Two Headed Lady’, ‘Live Mermaid’, and ‘The Half Man’.
My diptychs have relatively consistent lighting situations and backdrops. The first image in each pair is of the character on stage, as an awestruck audience would see them, in full costume and make up. The lighting is a spotlight, leaving some things in shadow, to create the feeling of a performance.
The second image is the big reveal, as I see it. The character is on a stark white backdrop, void of all vague lighting or optical illusions. No more costumes or trick lighting. It is just an honest portrait revealing that the character is not at all who you think they are. They are just people, with bad habits, bad attitudes and also pretty bad special effects. They aren’t even conjoined, or cut in half or from the deep depths of the ocean.
These diptychs serve as a before and after for me, and I feel like with these I am just scratching the surface of what my upcoming work will turn into. Although the images are meant to be polar opposites, that element also brings them together. They are so different, yet you are still forced to compare them because of a few consistent elements, a mermaid tail, a black box, and a set of pale faces staring back at you. The stare of each character in the second image of each pair is meant as a confrontation, a challenge and even an admission of defeat. Like, “You’ve caught me, it’s an act, congratulations.”
It’s almost sad, to me. As though being a normal person isn’t good enough for them, like they need to create the character to feel important. I think there’s a lot to be said about it, but like I said before, I have barely gotten to the bottom of it. I am sure I will though.

so today I went out and took some photos with my mamiya rb67 and Ryan helped me out by repurposing a water bottle into an extra long trigger for my camera

the trigger is basically one of these,

but the tube is really really long and instead of a little button making the needle extend, I just squeeze the water bottle and the air pressure pushes the needle which takes the picture

I babbled a bit about it on instagram, follow me if you'd like, my username is sealegslexi

My recent 365 image,'smoke', received quite a few requests for a blog post about the picture taking process, so I will try my best to explain it so you can play with it

The concept is relatively simple and all you'll need is

a remote (optional)
a tripod

and a small handheld bike light

the one I used was three dollars in target's one spot section and it was red

and obviously your camera, but that's a given, right?

so for this photo I was shooting in complete darkness except for the bike light. my camera was set to a 5 second exposure, at f/6.3, iso 250 and the lens I was using was a 50mm

click here to see the meta data if that interests you

I wanted to keep a low ISO because I didn't want my image too be too grainy and a high f stop because I wanted most of my body to be in focus and it's difficult to work with something like 1.4 in the dark. I focused with my bedroom light on using my remote and then set the focus to manual. After that I tried to stay in the same general area of my in each photo.

I set my camera up next to my bed and started playing with moving the light across my body fast enough to where my arm wouldn't be seen. Most of you have played with 'light painting' before so you know how this works, the light creates a path. I tried to keep the light close enough to my body that it would also illuminate wherever it passed. You can see how if I wasn't completely still, there would be multiple images of my face in one frame

these are some preliminary shots

Moving the side to side can create really interesting depth in the images and help to illuminate more parts of your body

I really liked the look of the light in this image, but it was too far from my face and left a silhouette

After a while ryan hopped into bed to bug me and wouldn't leave so I started experimenting with the two of us in frame. If I came close to him we would both be in light but if I backed away I could fall completely in shadow. It was a lot of experimentation and you have a lot of control depending on how you move the light. The quicker you move, the more faint the strand is. And when you slow down the light is extremely vivid and saturated.

The length of the exposure makes these multiple ghost images easy to manipulate to your advantage. In my case, for the final image I looked in one direction for a few seconds and in the opposite direction for the remaining time. I passed the light back and forth over ryan's body and my face so that we would both be illuminated. I wish I could say this particular image was fully intentional, but it turned out to be a happy accident among a series of experiments.

and voila!! an image was born (and then made purple in photoshop!)

I recommend you just play, see how the light behaves with quicker movements, with longer exposures (or shorter ones) and with multiple subjects. I would love to play with this type of lighting more and I am looking into getting multicolored light sources.

If you end up trying this let me know, I'd love to see your results! I hope this helped or at least entertained you a little bit :)
My photo history class is really fueling me with inspiration and food for thought.
Laura ventured out with me on short notice and let me throw flour all over her face and for that I am extremely thankful
(even though it was the meet up that wasn't)

here's her blog post

Emily and I met up Saturday morning and had breakfast at cafe fredrica, as tradition goes. We had ordered lots of tulle & some angel wings online so we started off experimenting with those indoors, in the master bedroom of the condo.

me in the master bedroom

As a storm started to come in, we left to get lunch and to pick up a few canopies at bed, bath and beyond. The afternoon was fast approaching so we headed to Jekyll island to find a place to shoot. We quickly found a little wooded side street with friendly people, as well as a deer and her baby.

We created a pulley system to suspend one of the canopies and started to shoot

Everyone keeps mentioning that the wood behind emily looks like a giant spider and I completely agree, I noticed it while we were editing. So creepy, it reminds me of HP.

After this location we headed to drift wood beach and found a new overturned tree. We suspended a canopy from it and created some composite images.

As well as some normal images

After sunset we had dinner and headed home to edit and stay up way too late

the next morning we had breakfast at the mallery street cafe and then went swimming with one of the canopies and some tulle. We used my underwater point & shoot and it was glorious. Some of these edits are experimental and I like em.
Em and I met up at bright mornings cafe, we had lunch, did some shopping at target and explored little talbot and big talbot. We had an early dinner at olive garden and continued our explorations. We were attacked by sand gnats and eventually settled on some large format on a boat dock. I have one large format image that I need to scan in, it'll be up soon :)
I went to the dollar tree and picked up lots of random items and I am going to try to utilize all of them as props. Things like children's toys, halloween decorations, arts and crafts. I used the dollar tree as a resource a lot in my last 365 and I want to try to do that again. I'd like to prove to myself that I can transform any object, no matter how cheap or silly.

these were an easy one, reminscent of the very first photo I took with my first 50mm 1.8 (lolol)

I am just settling with these for now and if I feel so inclined, I will shoot again tonight. I just don't feel satisfied yet
worked for nine hours and by the time I felt like shooting it was all blue outside and I always find this time of day so magical and eerie

I like asking questions on my images, I love reading your responses, what's your favorite time of the day? it can even be a specific time, like 7:34 p.m. EST. What is it and maybe link to a photo where you feel like you did it justice
I pushed her off the couch and typed this. #winning) and surprised me with a Lumix point and shoot for us to play with. It is everything proof and we are going to have so much fun with it.

I put the camera on a timer and swam above it a few times to get this, unfortunately, the pool was so heavily chlorinated that right now all of the words on this scree are completely blurred because I botched my eyes.

I am really excited to play with this some more with a model!

I waited until the afternoon to shoot because I wanted golden hour but the storm came in and I was out of luck. I went out to shoot and mosquitoes swarmed round me. I came inside and noticed some shadows around the apartment and I wanted to make some of my own. After hanging up a sheet in the bathroom doorway, I had a lot of trouble figure out what to photograph. Then Ryan came to play around with me and after a few hilarious photos it just fell into place

I am so thankful for him

I also received a really awesome email today that just really makes me want to reiterate that it blows my mind that people like my photos enough to really pay attention and want them to be involved in their own work

I can't even fathom it sometimes, thank you so much for just coming on here to see my 365 every day and saying nice things about my photos and just caring at all, you don't even have to, but you do. so thank you, I am eternally grateful

I need to start planning my days ahead of time but sometimes it's hard when you don't know what the day will throw at you
Maybe I will do some daily challenges or something, any suggestions to keep my mind sharp?
I also had a doctor's appointment and found out that I have a pretty bad case of poison ivy. This is what I get for playing in the woods too much for photos, go figure.

I organized our laundry in order from light to dark

and I played with powdered make up

I discovered that the little creatures from before were little turtles, not gators, by sharing a gaze with one on my way home.

I love the little place that we live, I am so grateful that it's so magical here

rolling with the punches ya'll, I just played around in the front of our apartment until I got something I liked

question: are you the type of photographer who, when you see your neighbors, will take your camera/tripod aside and pretend to look at photos or who keeps on taking photos like there's no tomorrow?

I'd like to admit that I am the former, I just step out of the way and try to avoid eye contact, especially in the middle of the night in the back of an apartment complex haha

I always forget that people don't think this is normal, but when they are staring I try to avoid confrontation because when people ask if I am taking pictures of birds or cars or a building it's weird to admit that I am just taking photos of myself, that's not something you see everyday (unless of course, you live in my building)

I will try to get better at it though, it's not something to be ashamed of, it's a nice conversation starter at least

next time maybe I'll be braver

have a good one!

I like this one , it reminds me of the constantly burning house in Synecdoche, New York.
